H. B. Bolton juggles dystopian thriller, superhero origin story, and alien-contact epic well. The first-person, present-tense narration had me locked inside Brynn’s head, feeling as though I was watching the action and sensing her self-doubt. While Brynn is a flawed, likable heroine, her companions are equally well-sculpted: Maya is bubbly and optimistic; Z is prickly and brave; Devin brings dry British wit; and Kai is sweet and awkward, especially in his mentorship of others. Emergence is cleverly paced. The first portion of the book is a character study with the fear test, which moves deliberately slowly; then it accelerates into teleportation rescues, drone strikes, and tense conflict. While the book excites readers with its unique exploration of embracing what makes us different, the insights about the nature of power are spellbinding. This book pulls you into a finely drawn world pulsing with chakras, ancient aliens, wormholes, and secret space programs. With its impeccable writing and extraordinary character work, it is a page-turning read.
